about

The late Toni Savage, who gave me so many opportunities to play support and headline sets at his folk clubs, also gave me this song. It is a poem written by Arthur Caddick, once considered to be the Cornish poet laureate, and I suspect Toni added the tune. It tells of a young sailor, Willy Wascombe, who loses a leg at the battle of Trafalgar and on returning home to Newlyn is employed as lookout for his smuggler uncle.
